How Do Spammers Get Your Email Address? |
The first step in reducing spam is understanding how spammers get your email address. In most cases this is done with a small program (Spam-bot) that goes searching across the Internet going from website to website (just like the search engines) searching the coding on the website for the "@" symbol. Why? Because the only place the "@" symbol is used on a website is as part of an email address. If a spam-bot finds an "@" symbol it knows it has found an email address to exploit. It quickly reads the surrounding code and then stores your email address in it's database. Then it moves on harvesting huge numbers of email address from hundreds of websites. The next step is of course to send you spam. But that's just the beginning. The spammer sells the list of email addresses to dozens of companies who then send you spam. And then they resell the list for a slightly lower price to try to get some of their money back. The end result is one spam-bot can see your email address and then you could have hundreds of companies spamming you in future months. |
Our Solution |
We don't use the "@" symbol on your website. We use formmail which is a program that essentially hides your email from the spam-bots. But you want people to see your email address We know that you would still like people to see your email address. Contact forms are nice, but sometimes people want to write your email address down to write you a letter later. So we hide your email address from the spam-bots while at the same time making your email address visible to humans. How do we do this? It's pretty simple actually (Although why most website companies don't do it is... well let's not go there). We simply create a graphic and put your email address on a graphic. It may look like text (Which spam-bots can read) but it's actually like we took a picture of the text and then put the picture on your website. Since computers cannot read the text on pictures (that explains all those little codes you have to enter when using some websites before you can use their services) they cannot read your email address. In other words, we give you the best of both worlds. Reduced spam and more emails from prospective buyers of your products and services. Don't you wish your website company cared this much about your profits? |
