It's amazing that some companies will accept someone's money "knowing" that the website they are going to build will not have a realistic chance of showing up on the first page of Google and the other search engines. Thus dooming the person for whom they are building the website for to failure. For example; We had a gentleman approach us one day saying he would like a website. We asked what kind of product he wished to sell on the Internet. He said, "Watches". We said "Great! How many different types of watches do you sell" and he said "one". We asked him how many pages of text he could write about his one watch. He said about 6. We then asked what his goal was. He said, "I want to be number one in the world for the word watches". We knew this was impossible and tried to find a polite way to explain this to him. We did some research and then explained to him that "The sites that are currently on the first page of Google all offer over 10,000 styles and types of watches on their websites. On average they had about 2 pages of text each. And so their websites were about 20,000 pages. He still didn't understand the problem. We tried to explain that the size of a website is a factor in how high Google will rank it and that there was zero chance that Google would rank his 6 page website higher than his competition who had 20,000 page sites. Our suggestions to him included building a website that targeted just his specific type of watch (Swiss Silver Men's Watch) or advertising on other companies' websites. He still didn't get it. He insisted we build him a website and got out his check book. We refused to accept the check and politely declined to build based on that his product was unable to compete in the market he wanted to dominate. He left with a smile and thank you and said he would find someone else to build the website. We got the impression he thought we weren't all that bright. A few months later his new website (8 pages) went online at the cost of a couple thousand dollars. For a couple years we could find it by typing the websites address into the browser window, but we could not find it in any search engine for any phrases relating to watches. Now we can't find the website at all. He evidently closed it down. When other companies discussing the beautiful website they are going to build you they very seldom mention how many pages it will be. You need to beware because "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a cheap price is forgotten". Or that if you try to cut corners you may end up getting what you pay for. We on the other hand recommend that your website have enough pages to be competitive and that if that is not an option we will recommend not spending the money to build an optimized site. We would rather walk away, than take anyone's money knowing that their website is most likely going to fail in it's primary objective. |
