Before our company came into existence the future founder of the company, Steven Nunnally, spent many years using mass mailing campaigns and websites to help parents of missing children, abused women, the disabled, seniors, etc... There was no money involved except what he spent out of his own pocket and he never applied for non-profit status and did not take donations. It was simply his way of trying to make the world a better place. He had never even considered opening a business to make money off of the skills he was developing from his efforts to help others.
So when people started approaching Steven (unsolicited) and asking him to build websites Steven made a decision which has become the core focus of our company. The decision was that Steven had learned his skills with websites, understanding how people react to websites, email campaigns, motivations, etc... trying to help people to make the world a little bit better place to live in and that not once had these skills been used to do anything more than help good people. And so Steven set up some very simple and straight forward rules for our company.
Rules that almost put us out of business several times the first year when the company was new and struggling, but which now really help us stand out from the crowd.
Steven said that the first rule would be that we would only build websites for nice people. In fact, that got tested in the third week our doors were open. A very rich man had approached Steven, noted his skills, and basically agreed to build ten websites, big websites, with an estimated cost of over $100,000. At the time Steven was still working alone and had about $300 in the bank.
Steven hung up on the man. Fifteen minutes went by as the man waited for Steven to call back. Finally the man called back and said, "We must have gotten disconnected". Steven politely said, "No, I hung up on you". Steven hung up on him again.
Then minutes later the man calls Steven for a third time. He asks Steve not to hang up. He says, "At this point it's obvious that we are not going to do business together. I would never spend a dime with a company where the owner hung up on me. Twice. But I want to understand what just happened." Steven says, "Okay".
The man continues, "I know that you only started your business 3 weeks ago. I am assuming you have little or nothing in the bank and are struggling". Steven agrees. "You also know that I am a very rich man, have a lot of business interests across the country, lots of connections and that I just finished negotiating a deal with you in which you will build ten websites for my company for a cost of over $100,000". Steven again agrees.
So finally the man asks, "If you know all that, and we were getting along great, why would you throw it all away and hang up on me. It just doesn't make sense". To which Steve replied, "Yes were were getting along great, I understood that you wanted to spend a lot of money with my company, but you obviously did not understand me and what I believe in". The man says, "Please explain it to me". Steven continues, "I've spent the last ten years building websites to help parents of missing children, the less fortunate, the disabled, seniors and the abused."
The man says, "Yes, I understood all that from the beginning". And so Steven summarizes it for him, "We were talking and getting along fine. Then through the phone I heard your front door open. Your wife called out "Honey I'm Home". That's when I heard your hand go over the mouth piece, but evidently not all of it as you shouted to her in return "Shut Up I'm On The Phone". Steven hung up. End of Story.
And almost the end of our company. But word started to get around that there was a company who actually worked hard, did it's absolute best for each client and had this strange rule they would only help nice people. Things started to flourish. And today, we receive so many referrals from our clients that we don't even bother to advertise. Even this website you are on today is more to help people than to sell to people.
